Tourism promotion in Haryana began in 1966. When a young, eager and determined new state found its identity. Despite Haryana not having any special tourist attractions, an innovative plan was devised by Haryana Tourism. It invited highway travellers to break tedious journeys at splendidly designed tourist centres. It built Highway Complexes on important national highways passing through the state for service of the travellers. Haryana Tourism also set up small but compact tourist centres at district headquarter towns. Under its final scheme of things, Haryana Tourism developed tourist spots at places of tourist interest in the state. Giving identity, continuity and appeal, the complexes of Haryana Tourism were named after birds. It also diversified into farm holidays, adventure tourism, pilgrim tourism and Meetings, Incentives, Conferences & Exhibitions (MICE Tourism). That's not all, it is instrumental in organising world-class Fairs & Festivals which include Surajkund International Crafts Mela '13, Baisakhi Mela, Mango Mela, Pinjore Heritage Festival and Geeta Jayanti Utsav.
