Tata Power is India's largest power company with significant international presence, with operations ranging from Fuel and Logistics to Generation and Transmission to Distribution and Trading - exploring various renewable sources of energy in India and globally – Tata Power now has a significant presence in wind, solar, hydro, geothermal and waste heat recovery energy space, making it one of the largest renewable energy players in India.

Tata Power had its inception in 1915, establishing India's first large hydro-electric project in Khopoli, Maharashtra, driven by its late founder, Shri Jamshetji N. Tata's pioneering vision. Today, a hundred years later, Tata Power is a respected name; it is a global company with presence across continents and is a dedicated resource to the country, providing 'Invisible Goodness' to the nation. A goodness that although invisible, is crucial.

The Company's technology leadership is legendary, with proof in the form of successful public-private partnerships in Generation, Transmission and Distribution, such as, ‘Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited’ with Delhi Vidyut Board for distribution in North Delhi, ‘Powerlinks Transmission Ltd.’ with Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. for evacuation of power from Tala hydro plant in Bhutan to Delhi, and ‘Maithon Power Ltd.’ with Damodar Valley Corporation for a Mega Power Project in Jharkhand.

Tata Power has developed the country's first 4000 MW Ultra Mega Power Project at Mundra in Gujarat, based on super-critical technology. The Company has been exploring various renewable sources of energy in India and globally. Some of the international projects include strategic investments in Indonesia through 30% stake in Indonesia’s leading coal company – PT Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) and a geothermal project in Northern Sumatra, supporting the development of approx 240 MW geothermal generation capacity. The company is also exploring growth opportunities in South Africa through a joint venture with Exxaro Resources, called ‘Cennergi’, which focusses on investigation of electricity generation projects in South Africa, Botswana and Namibia. The Company’s presence in Singapore is through Trust Energy Resources to securitise coal supply and the shipping of coal for its thermal power generation operations. Tata Power is present in Australia through investments in enhanced geothermal and clean coal technologies; it has 10% stake in Australian company-Geodynamics, partnership with Sunengy Pty Ltd, an Australian solar power company, and has also invested in Exergen, Australia for clean coal technologies. Tata Power also has a JV with the Royal Government of Bhutan under which it has implemented 126 MW Dagachhu Hydro Project with Druk Green Power Company.

Tata Power, through its subsidiary Tata Power International Pte Ltd, has signed an agreement with Clean Energy Invest AS (Clean Energy) and IFC InfraVentures (IFC) for developing hydro projects in Georgia for sale of power primarily to Turkey. The hydro projects will be of an aggregate capacity of 400 MW and would be developed in three phases. In June 2013, the Company acquired 40% shares in Adjaristsqali Netherlands BV, which is implementing hydro projects in Georgia through its 100% subsidiary, Adjaristsqali Georgia LLC. The construction of 185 MW Shuakhevi Hydro Project has commenced with all major contracts having been awarded. Activities to achieve the financial closure are at an advanced stage. The development of 150 MW Koromkheti Hydro Project has also commenced.

The Company was awarded the Long Phu 2 Power Project by the Government of Vietnam based on the pre-feasibility studies in2015. The MOU has been signed to develop a thermal power plant, which will utilize imported coal. In accordance with the MOU, Tata Power will carry out feasibility studies for developing this power project on build, own and transfer basis. The Long Phu 2 Power Project is Tata Power's first coal based project outside India.

Tata Power has partnered with SN Power (Norway) to set up joint ventures for developing hydropower projects in India and Nepal. The companies are pursuing potential project opportunities based on the vast reserves of renewable energy in the Himalayan region.

In line with its commitment to ‘sustainability’ and ‘responsible growth’, Tata Power runs key programmes to help propagate the message of conservation and civic sense. ‘Club Enerji’, a success story, is a school outreach programme which instigates students to become responsible citizens by conserving energy, resources and civic & moral values, thus contributing to nation-building. The ‘Greenolution’ initiative by Tata Power aims to willing subscribe every individual to pledge to ensure a greener and sustainable planet. Further to this, Tata Power launched two properties under Greenolution in 2015, ‘Act for Mahseer’ – the programme to help spread the message of conservation of Mahseer, an endangered species of fish, which Tata Power has been conserving for more than 40 years; and ‘Be Green’– a collaborative and participative effort that includes all our consumer initiatives that infuse the aim of sustainability.
